New year’s resolutions… We all have them, for smokers every year it’s to quit smoking. We tend to tell ourselves we will, and we try but sometimes it’s just easier to give up trying.
This year, why not actually follow through? How to? Firstly, you have to want to give up smoking and you have to want to do it for yourself. And what’s the worst that could happen, that you actually realize that your mind is a lot stronger than you think?
So if you’re serious about stopping, and you see that there are no advantages to smoking cigarettes… Yes we can smell that bad breath. Here are some tips to help get you started from Allen Carr:
Set a date and time to stop: Yes, you can carry on smoking as usual right up to that date and time. Don’t try to stop beforehand… It just makes your cigarettes seem golden.
Remind yourself: You’re not giving up a pleasure, and it is not punishment. Cigarettes do absolutely nothing for you. No they don’t provide you with pleasure and no they don’t help release stress (in fact they increase stress and anxiety).
Embrace the advantages: You are about to embark on making marvelous gains: health, energy, good odor and money. You will also gain in confidence, self-respect and the quality and length of your life.
Break the association: If you associate smoking with coffee or drinking, instead of thinking, “Ah, I can’t have a cigarette now”, just think “this is great, I can enjoy my cup of coffee without choking”.
Do not keep cigarettes: In case of an “emergency”. Trash your secret stash. If you choose to keep a pack for just in case – it means you are doubting your decision on quitting. Remember: The minute you put your cigarette out. You are ending slavery and are officially a non-smoker.
Finally: Light your final cigarette and make a solemn vow that regardless of what highs or lows life may bring you, a cigarette is not going to help you and you’re making marvelous positive gains.
