Often it’s too late when we realize that what we signed up for isn’t what we actually wanted, and when trouble strikes, it’s too late to correct.
So what exactly is in your Car Insurance Policy?
Third Party Car Insurance:
The least expensive of them all, yet not the most practical… This type of car insurance, should anything happen, provides the least amount of coverage. This type of insurance essentially means that if you bump into another car, your insurance will cover their damages and you’ll have to cover your own.
This type of insurance doesn’t cover your losses if you have an accident. If the accident wasn’t your fault, you can then claim against the other party. Essentially, this means that if both you and the other driver, or if only the other driver were at fault, the other driver could also be held responsible.
Remember: The most your insurance will pay out is of the value of the car in writing.
Comprehensive Car Insurance:
This policy gives you the best cover, and will cover both your car and the other car involved, as well as theft and hijacking. Your car will also be replaced should it be written off in an accident, and if you break down, emergency assistance will be provided. However, depending on your provider, insurance may differ.
What all types of insurance do not cover:
- No licence while driving
- Endorsed licence while driving (a licence that has penalties because of reckless driving)
- Invalid drivers or vehicle licence
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Reckless driving
- Unroadworthy vehicle
- Unauthorised use of vehicle
- Keys left in or on the car
- Leaving the scene of an accident
- Using the car for commercial purposes (like a non-registered metered taxi) or for racing.
Remember: Any additional benefits can be added to your car insurance policy, like cover for your windscreen, sound or add-ons.
